On 25 January 2020, the European Commission announced firm steps were taken to ensure the protection of wildlife from the negative effects of lead in the environment, by restricting its use in gunshot in or around wetlands.
Lead is commonly used in ammunition and fishing tackle and is known to cause lead poisoning of wildlife and contamination of both the soil and water when released in the environment.
The measure — adopted under the framework of REACH— aims to reduce lead pollution and to prevent the death of lead poisoning of over 1 million waterbirds each year.
It will start applying in two years’ time and constitute one of the first deliverables of the EU 2030 Biodiversity Strategy.
