ECHA Confirms Chemical Universe Is on Track to Meet 2027 Target

The goal of the ‘Chemical Universe’ or ‘mapping of the registered substances’ is to help Member States and EU Authorities easily identify and manage chemicals that may be hazardous and respond with appropriate regulatory actions.

In 2021, 250 high-volume chemicals were assessed by ECHA. In parallel, the Agency reviewed 530 low-volume chemicals. These actions allow a more thorough understanding of the regulatory needs for all substances registered above one tonne by 2027.

In addition, a new pool called ‘assessment of regulatory needs’ has been created to show which substances are under a group assessment. In all, ECHA assessed 1 900 substances and categorized them based on their need for regulatory action. This leaves 1 300 substances to be reviewed by 2027.

To follow the progress made in clarifying the need for regulatory action for all registered substances above one tonne, you may check out the Chemical Universe here: https://echa.europa.eu/it/universe-of-registered-substances
