9 new substances added to the UK REACH Candidate List
As the UK continues to move toward alignment with the EU, 9 new entries were added to the UK REACH Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) on October 19th by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). UK module users can now download these updates into ExESS via CDP.
Companies that produce products (substances, mixtures, or articles) containing these substances must now assess the impact on their regulatory obligations, including Safety Data Sheets (SDS), labels, and additional technical documentation.
The 9 newly added substances
These nine substances or substance groups are now identified as SVHC’s in accordance with Article 57 criteria:
- Medium Chain Chlorinated Paraffins (MCCPs)
- 1,1′-Ethane-1,2-diylbisoxybis2,4,6-tribromobenzene (BTBPE)
- Bis(4-chlorophenyl) sulphone (BCPS)
- 2-tert-Butyl-6-(5-chloro-2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-methylphenol (Bumetrizole)
- Oligomerisation and alkylation reaction products of 2-phenylpropene and phenol (OAPP)
- Reaction mass of triphenylthiophosphate and tertiary butylated phenyl derivatives
- O,O,O-Triphenyl phosphororthioate (TPPT)
- Perfluoroheptanoic acid and its salts
- 4,4′-2,2,2-Trifluoro-1-(trifluoromethyl)ethylidenediphenol and its salts
These substances meet the criteria for inclusion on the list for their reprotoxic properties, persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity (PBT), or very high persistence and bioaccumulation (vPvB).
What responsibilities do suppliers now have?
If one or more of the listed SVHCs are present at or above 0.1 per cent in a company’s product, they have a duty to:
- Communicate information on substances in articles.
- Notify of candidate list substances in articles.
- Communicate information on substances in mixtures.
- Communicate information on substances.
It is also recommended for companies to:
- Review the inventory of substances and mixtures;
- Check if any of the new SVHCs are part of the product composition;
- Assess the impact on labelling;
- Update Safety Data Sheets where necessary;
Stay under control of Candidate Lists
New regulatory updates can significantly affect products and documentation.
With ExESS SDS software, companies can keep their regulatory documentation aligned with updates to the UK REACH Candidate List. ExESS supports SDS authoring, substance and mixture classification, label generation and version control, helping companies manage compliance and keep documentation up to date.
